a thought…

Famous science fiction writer Isaac Asimov once said: “There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”

I’ve been thinking about thinking.

You know that term, “scary smart” — ? Why is being smart so scary to people? It seems to me that the anti-intellectual movement has gained even more momentum in the last decade.

“Don’t think so much” — heard that? That often means, “Don’t worry, and live in the moment,” and I am on board with that. But sometimes it’s said in response to someone actually trying to problem-solve, or someone trying to identify a pattern to change. If we, as a culture, did a little more thinking and a little less base reacting from emotions, I believe that the fabric of our society would be woven quite differently. To be clear, I’m very pro emotions — being aware of them, expressing them — so what I’m saying here is HAVE the emotions, process them, but don’t react BLINDLY to them.

Lastly, EVERYTHING we do uses our brain. While I believe metaphorically that our heart/soul should drive our actions, biologically, our emotions are tied in with brain neurochemicals, impulsive actions are generated in the brain, our art, our decision making, everything — all have major brain involvement.

What do you THINK ?
